One year in Hyde Park

Photographs from one of London's most loved parks

Luxury living in the heart of Mayfair

Overlooking Hyde Park in one direction and the rooftops of Mayfairin the other are these luxury Grosvenor House apartments on Park Lane. Not a bad location for a central London pad!

Morning jog in the park

With the London Marathon approaching (21 April) there’s been an increase in the number of joggers around town of late, although whether or not this particular jogger is in training for the city’s great annual run I don’t know… he ran past too quickly to ask!

Going for a run at Speaker’s Corner – a jogger and his Jack Russell dog.

Remembering animals in war

An elephant carved in Portland stone is one of the creatures featured in David Backhouse‘s Animals in Warmemorial. Horses, camels, dogs and birds are others to have been caught up in human conflict in the past hundred years.

War horses

Unveiled in 2004 is this memorial at Brook Gate on Park Lane that pays tribute to the animals that ‘served, suffered and died alongside the British, Commonwealth and Allied forces in the wars and conflicts of the 20th century’. Powerful stuff.

Digging in the dirt

Heavy machinery being used to landscape the Parade Ground area of Hyde Park ready for the summer ahead.

A farm or a park?!

IMG_0484

Tractors being used to help relay the turf in the park following last summer’s concerts and Olympic spectator zone. After removing the millions of wood chippings from the Parade Ground area of the park, groundsmen have the task of turning it green once more…. although it currently looks more like a farmer’s field than a Royal Park.

Mystical mermaid

IMG_0464

This statue of a mermaid – who wears and long skirt and has a fish around her waist – dates from the 1970s and is a replacement for the original 1867 statue by William Robert Colton. It’s sometimes referred to as the ‘Little Nell’ statue.

Slippery When Wet

Red Hot Chilli Peppers are among the many bands and musicians who’ve played in Hyde Park over the years and are listed on this memorial drinking fountain in the park alongside Pink Floyd and Pavarotti. Blur and Bruce Springsteen were two of the headline acts in last summer’s concerts, while Bon Jovi have just been announced as the main act on 5 July this year…. tickets available now.
